A thirty-year-old native Ukrainian. A thirty-three-year-old Russian. They skate together since 2010. But both were in the category of Pairs successful even before.
Volosozhar represented Ukraine for many years with Stanislav Morozov and they made it to the fourth place in the world. Conversely Trankov with his partner Maria Mukhortova celebrated the world junior title in 2005 and then the European silver in 2008.
Volosozhar and Trankov got together after the Games in Vancouver 2010. “Stanislav was determined that the Olympic season will be his last, and I wanted to skate on,” she said then. At the time, her former partner Morozov contacted Trankov and managed the cooperation.
Due to the rule that it is not allowed to represent after the change of national colors for nineteen months, they had to hurry. They wanted to catch the World Championships in March 2011. For this reason, they announced the end of their career right after the Games in Vancouver.
“I have been dreaming about skating with Tatiana since 2006,” said Trankov at the time. Entry of the new Russian couple into the competition was expected with a huge excitement. At their first international competition they won silver at the World Championships in Moscow 2011. Their career was filled with European and World medals after that.
Even from Olympic Games in Sochi 2014, the gold medal was expected and finally, they got two of them. Together with the Russian team they succeeded also in the premiere team competition and became the first figure skaters who managed such a “double”.
Before the following winter, Trankov hurt his arm what in the end meant a break for the whole winter. During this sports pause they announced their engagement and in summer 2015 they got married.
In the last season they showed their comeback in Bratislava at the European Championships with a victory. However, the World Championships in March was a disappointment for them, they ended far sixth. How it is going to be with their career? In August last year, they announced to the Russian journalists: “As it is necessary to heal up all the vaunds and injuries, which have appeared during our career, we decided to have a break until the Russian championships. The regeneration needs time.”
But a month later they confirmed that they will skip the whole season because they were expecting a child. So they will not defend their title in Ostrava.
