Entries: three reigning European Champions and Kostner

A total number of 172 skaters from 34 countries will participate at ISU European Figure Skating Championships® 2017 which will be held in OSTRAVAR ARÉNA in Ostrava from 25th till 29th January 2017. Three of the four title defenders from Bratislava 2016 will take part.

There are 36 competitors in the official entries in Ladies as well as in Men category – including the shining stars of the last seasons Evgenia Medvedeva of Russia and Javier Fernández of Spain. They both dominated at European and World Championships in 2016. The seventeen year old Medvedeva remains unbeaten also in this season and only Asian figure skaters were better than Fernández. “It’s great news that he will skate in Ostrava as he is a double World Champion and won European title four-times in a row,” said Stanislav Židek, President of the Organizing Committee.

Alexei Bychenko of Israel and Russian Maxim Kovtun, the medalists from the last Championships in Bratislava, will be again Fernandez’s biggest rivals. However Evgeniya Medvedeva has toughter job in front of her. She has to beat not only her teammate Anna Pogorilaya, the bronze medalist form last year, but especially returning Carolina Kostner from Italy. “The battle between Kostner and the young Russians will be really interesting,” predicts Židek.

In the Ice Dance competition the French Gabriella Papadakis, Guillaume Cizeron will defend their title so the only category without reigning champions will remain Pairs as Russians Tatiana Volosozhar, Maxim Trankov skiped this season due to Tatiana’s pregnancy. “But we can’t forget about the Germans Aliona Savchenko and Bruno Massot, so the Pairs category will have its high quality,” reminds Židek.

In the Czech national team there are two men, one woman, one dancing couple and one pair. Michal Březina, the bronze medaillist from ISU European Figure Skating Championships in Zagreb in 2013 who finished on the 10th place in last edition of the championships in Bratislava 2016 will be accompanied by 17-year-old Jiří Bělohradský in Men´s category.

Newly crowned Czech figure skating queen, 17-year-old Michaela Lucie Hanzlíková will represent Czech Republic in Ladies category for the first time at ISU European Figure Skating Championships as well as the reigning Junior World Champions in pairs category Anna Dušková, Martin Bidař.

Dance couple Cortney Mansour and Michal Češka already looks forward to the event in Ostrava as they want to better their result from the last event edition: 13th place in Bratislava 2016.

ISU European Figure Skating Championships are coming back to the Czech Republic after an 18-year break as they were held in Prague – in 1999 for the last time. There will be four days of competitions in Ostrava, followed by the final exhibition on Sunday.
